Here are some burglary facts and some top tips on keeping your home secure –

  • Two out of ten burglaries don’t even have to use force, they get in through an open door or window.

  • Nearly 60% of burglaries take place under the cover of darkness.

  • Around a third of burglars get in through a window.

Keeping your home secure is one of the most worthwhile things you can do and doesn’t take much time or effort – here’s our tips –

  • Make sure you secure all doors and windows when leaving the house, even if you are just popping out for just five minutes.

  • Hide financial documents and other keys, if the worst was to happen they won’t be able to steal your car or have your personal information to hand.

  • Never leave a spare key under a doormat, flowerpot or any other obvious hiding place, these will be the first places a burglar will look.

  • If you have taken out extra security precautions, make a burglar aware of these, alarm boxes on view or stickers in the window, if you have a dog, place a warning sign that is visible.

  • Keep valuable items out of view from passers by, keep the temptation at bay!

  • Fit visible window locks, they act as a huge deterrent.

Ensure all your windows and doors are secured with appropriate locks that are British Standard Insurance Approved. If any lock that is used to secure your home is not an Insurance Approved lock, if a burglar gains entry through using this door, your insurance will not be valid!

Check that all doors to your property (and the frames) are strong and in good condition. Note that sliding patio doors should always be fitted with security bolts to prevent them from being lifted.
